FOOTBALL SEASON IS UPON US!!!!!

For me personally this is one of the best times of the year when it comes to sports! NFL and college football are starting up! Baseball is moving towards October and the playoffs, and college basketball is in sight! It doesn’t get much better than that as far as sports are concerned.

Do you remember the last time your team lost, and I’m not talking about a close game, I am talking about the last time they got destroyed, when it wasn’t even close from the beginning? Do you remember a time like that? Very likely, after the game when the coach was interviewed he said something along the lines of, “We just need to get back to the basics.” In all sports, if you fail at the basics, it doesn’t matter how much talent you have, how great your plays are, how perfect your game plan is, if you fail at the basics you will not succeed. That is why professional athletes do some of the same drills they did when they were 7 years old learning how to play their sport.

The same is true for Christianity. If we fail at the basics, we will not succeed. How are you doing when it comes to the basics? Are you spending time in God’s Word so that you know His voice? John 10 teaches us that if we know God’s voice we will follow Him, and not follow strangers. We have lots of competing voices that try to distract us from the voice of God. So do you know God’s voice? Do you spend time in His Word? How about prayer? Is prayer a significant part of your life? Read through the book of Acts and see how integral prayer is in everything in the life of the earliest Christians! How about sharing your faith? Are you sharing Christ with those God has placed in your life both in deed and word? Lastly, are you growing? Are you different than you were last year, or the same?

So how are you doing on the basics? Maybe as a church we need to get back to the basics of digging into God’s Word, desperately seeking God in prayer, sharing our faith, and making sure we are continuing to grow and become more Christ-like. Let’s get back to the basics together!
In Christ,
Josh Robertson

Please Pray for Us!
06.24.2010

On July 10, our youth and sponsors will be taking the bus to Ottawa, Ontario, on a mission trip. We’ll return Sunday, July 18. It would mean so much to us if you would lift us up in prayer...

We are going with World Changers, a North American Mission Board short-term youth mission group. During the days, our students will be involved in construction projects as well as looking for witnessing opportunities. Each evening will consist of worship and teaching. That should be good!

Let me know if you need more information. I will have email access while at Centrifuge at Glorieta (the week of June 21); feel free to contact me that way or on my cell phone. Thank you!

Remember
06.01.2010

As I have been reading through the Old Testament, one of the things that has been sticking out to me is how over and over again God tells the Israelites to make sure that they do not forget the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:12 states, “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” As God was leading the Israelites to the land that He had promised them, over and over again He made it very clear that their greatest temptation when they entered the land was that they would forget the Lord. Specifically, that they would forget what the Lord had done on their behalf. Despite God’s numerous warnings, the Israelites became content and happy and forgot the Lord, and the results were devastating. Forgetting the Lord led the Israelites to serve other gods, which led to their destruction time and time again. The temptation for the Israelites is the same temptation that we have today.

I say to you and to myself, “do not forget the Lord.” Do not forget the Lord, instead remember. Remember how He has worked in your life in the past and is working in your life right now. Here is what I would like you to do. Sometime very soon (so you don’t forget) write out your testimony of how God intervened in your life and brought you from death to life. After you do this, will you make a copy for me and give it to me? I am not entirely sure what I am going to do with the testimonies, but I would like to put something together that we can look at so that we do not forget the Lord, but instead that we will remember the Lord and the amazing ways in which He has worked in and through each of us. Send me your testimonies, and also stories of miracles that have happened in your life when God miraculously intervened in a situation. Feel free to mail these stories to the church, e-mail them to me, or give them to me when you see me. Let’s encourage one-another as we remember the Lord and what He has done! Thanks, and I look forward to receiving your letters!

In Christ,
Josh

'Growing a Hear for the Hurting' Weekend
03.25.2010

Students: Join us Friday through Sunday, April 23—25 for an amazing weekend as we begin growing a heart for the hurting. The Bible has a lot to say about the hurting, the oppressed, the poor, the afflicted, the orphan and the widow, and we need to hear it.

Growing up in a consumerist culture, we often think that life is about getting as much stuff as we can for ourselves! We think that as long as we give a certain percentage to God, we can do whatever we want to with the rest. But I believe there is more to it than that.

Join us as we dig deep into the Word of God to see His heart for the hurting, and then begin to align our hearts with His. The weekend will be full of Bible study, discussions and service opportunities.

InChWesta & ARYA - December 2009

ARYA Needs You!

1.) We need people to help out with childcare for the ARYA (Arapahoe Road Young Adults) Bible study for married couples. We are looking for people to volunteer from 6:30-8:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the church while we have Bible study at our (Robertson’s) house. Right now we have one child and soon will have three, with a fourth running not too far behind! By helping out with childcare, you allow parents to focus on God, their marriage, and fellowship without little tikes running around causing chaos! In my opinion it is not just watching children; it is being a part of the work that God is doing in the lives of young couples in the church. Will you join us in this ministry? Sign up for a date that will work for you on the bulletin board in the foyer, and thanks for partnering with us in God’s ministry to young adults!

2.) In January we are having our first young adult retreat! If you would be willing to be a sponsor for someone who would not otherwise be able to go on this retreat, please send me an e-mail or give me a call. The cost is going to be between $25-35 per person. If you can help out please let me know! Thanks for partnering in God’s ministry to young adults!

Have we become complacent?

Amos 6:1- “Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!” The youth and I have begun a series looking at some of the Minor Prophets whose primary emphasis is worship. Throughout Scripture it is made very clear that worship is how we live our lives day in and day out, not just what we do when we gather together. Amos 6 announces destruction upon Israel because the people had become complacent in their worship, in the way they lived their lives.

As you read chapter six, it is clear that their material possessions had caused them to be complacent and lazy. They lived in a land of comfort, so they created a god of comfort. They crafted the true God to be a god who was concerned about their having a life of great comfort and entertainment. However, this god is not the God of the Bible. Beyond the basic necessities of life— food and shelter—Scripture does not seem to present a God who is concerned about our always being more and more comfortable and entertained, but rather a God who is concerned about His people impacting His kingdom in powerful ways.

I fear that our great material possessions, which have led us to be very comfortable and well entertained, have also led us to be very complacent and lazy in our living. The more comfortable our houses are and the more entertained we are, the less likely we are to spend time in prayer, reading God’s word, and memorizing Scripture. The more comfortable our houses are and the more consumed we are with being entertained, the less likely we are to go out and serve others, fighting for the oppressed and downtrodden, sharing our faith, and building relationships with those who do not know Christ. Join me in prayer and action. Let us not let our comforts and entertainment, which God is not concerned about, lead us to be complacent in worship (which He is very concerned about), in the way that we live our lives.

In Christ, Josh

Do we really believe it?

The students and I have just finished up a series about evangelism and how important it is that we share our faith. One of things we talked about was that if we really believe that the Christian message is true, we will be sharing our faith with those that God has placed in our sphere of influence. If we really believe that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, we will have no other option but to be sharing our faith. My prayer for the students and my prayer (and challenge) for all of us is that no one in our sphere of influence would go to hell because WE never shared Christ with them.

Life is fragile and there is no guarantee that any of us, or any of those in our sphere of influence, will be here tomorrow. Let us boldly and courageously share the message of Jesus Christ. Let us be faithful in sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. After all, if we really believe it to be true, we can’t help but share the message of salvation which comes through Jesus Christ alone!
In Christ,
Josh

What if?

The students have just finished a series of lessons on Sunday mornings entitled: “Wanted: Servants — Pew Warmers Need Not Apply.” We spent five weeks looking at the life of Christ and how He served others and in turn calls us to be servants. Philippians 2:3-4 states, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

WOW. What if ARBC was characterized by that verse? Can you imagine what ARBC would be like if everyone truly considered others as better than themselves? I believe that this church would be a different place. I believe it would be a river in the middle of the desert where people could come and experience an attitude, a love, and a concern for others that cannot be experienced anywhere else. A place where, when one person is hurting, no matter who that person is, the body surrounds and loves on them. A place where every time a need is known, it is met just as fast. A place where people don’t come just to get, but a place where people come to give. A place where the love of Christ permeates everything that is done. A place where lives are changed because for the first time people are seeing, experiencing, and feeling the love of Jesus Christ! What if ARBC is that place? Can ARBC be that place? Will you begin to make ARBC that place?

Jesus Came!
Eleven of us recently got back from a week at Centrifuge Camp in Glorieta, New Mexico, and it was amazing! The best way to explain it would be in the words of Jacob Rogers as he shared during the last business meeting about what God did at camp . He hit the nail on the head with the words, “Jesus Came!” Jesus did come indeed! God’s presence was unmistakable, and He did a mighty work in the lives of our students! Many of them recommitted their lives to Christ; several of them, for the first time in their lives, want to live out their relationship with Jesus! Many of the students shared their hurts, struggles, and deep pains with others for the first time! It was awesome to watch the body of Christ in action as we prayed together, worshipped together, laughed together, cried together, and we were changed together. It was truly a glimpse of what the church is supposed to be.

I ask you to join me in prayer for our students and the student ministry here at ARBC. Pray for the students who have given their lives fully to Christ as they are now back home and facing pressure from friends who do not want to see them change their lives. Also, pray that their passion for God, for worship, and for seeing the lives of others changed would be contagious among all of our youth, and among our church as a whole. Thank you for your financial support, which allowed us to go, and thank you for your prayer support, which was felt the entire week!
Jesus Came!

Just contact me if you want to set something up.

Heidi and I want to say thanks for all of the recognition and encouragement we received when you celebrated my graduation from Denver Seminary. Is It In You???

The youth have begun a new series looking at the Spiritual Disciplines. Recently we asked the question, “Is It In You?”

Gatorade, a popular sports drink, has a current marketing campaign asking the same question. Their commercials present famous athletes sweating out whatever color Gatorade they had been drinking; then the commercial asks, “Is It In You?” What a question when it comes to Christians and God’s Word! “Is It (God’s Word) In You?” Is it a part of who you are, so that whatever circumstances you face in life, you can turn to God’s Word for truth even if your Bible is not with you?

My encouragement for the students, and for all of us as well, is to memorize Scripture, no matter how difficult it might be for you to commit things to memory. Why?

So that when temptation comes, we can fight off Satan with Scripture. So that when trials and tribulations come, we can claim the promises of God. So that when someone asks us about our faith, we can share with them THE Words of life. So that our lives will never be the same again, because God’s Words of TRUE LIFE are always on our minds.

Join us as we seek to have God’s Word be “In Us.”
In Christ,
Josh

InChWeSta’s second annual winter retreat, “ICE BOUND” is going to be Friday through Sunday, January 16—18, at Ponderosa Retreat & Conference Center.

I am very excited to see what God is going to do on this retreat; it is a weekend full of crazy games, fun with friends, not a lot of sleep, but most importantly, a message that can change lives.

My former youth pastor and now close friend, Jim Johnson, will be our speaker for the weekend. He is an excellent communicator with youth, and more importantly, he is passionately in love with Jesus Christ, with being a spokesperson for Christ and seeing lives of students changed!

YOU ARE A YOUTH LEADER!

All right, you might be thinking, “No, I am not! I have never signed up to help out with any Youth event, and I never will!” Okay, you might not be a youth leader in the sense of working directly with them, but, in reality, you are because the students at ARBC gain a lot of their understanding of what it means to be a Christian by watching you. And trust me, they are watching you. They notice how you worship, how you act, how you talk. They can quickly tell if you are living a life desiring to please God or if you are living a life of hypocrisy.

It is my prayer that the adults in our church will provide excellent examples of how to go about this Christian life. Granted, we will fail, but how we respond to our failure can be a valuable learning experience for students.

Praying for Masks to be Removed
Believe it or not, Halloween (or whatever name you want to give it) will be here in no time, and kids, teenagers, and even some adults will be putting on all sorts of masks and costumes.

While these masks and costumes are often cute and make us smile and laugh, I want to talk about a different kind of mask that many teenagers wear. This is a mask, or even multiple masks, that they put on and take off at different times. Many in the church today have a Christian mask, a school mask, a sports mask, a work mask, a friend’s mask, and maybe even more.

My hope and prayer is that through InChWeSta, these students will begin to see that Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ that goes beyond the confines of the church building on Sundays and Wednesdays, that being a Christian means that they are a Christian at school, on the sports fields, in their jobs, and with their friends.

Please join me in praying that our students will begin to remove the masks that they wear and live for Jesus Christ every day of the week and in all the places God brings them!
In Christ,
Josh Robertson

InChWesta - September 2008
09.08.2008

Starting Sunday, September 7, our Youth will be going through The Gospel Journey, a reality-based video series put out by Dare2Share Ministries. In it, seven individuals go into the wilderness for seven days and go through the Gospel Message. These individuals represent a variety of beliefs including an agnostic, a minister’s kid, an atheist, a wiccan, an Episcopalian, a Presbyterian, a city girl and a preacher. After each “talk” there is a discussion time in which the individuals are able to ask questions and bring up objections based on their belief systems. A group of our students previewed this series in the spring and all agreed that it was the clearest, non-threatening presentation of the Gospel we have ever heard. I have been encouraging the students to be courageous and invite their friends to this event, which will last seven weeks. Please join us in prayer so that they will be able to do that, so their friends can come and hear the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Also be praying with us that as a result of this journey, lives would be changed for eternity.

MEXICO MISSION TRIP REPORT

If you were not able to make it to our Mexico Mission Trip report during the July business meeting, I want to give you a short report. While we were in Matamoras, the students participated in a variety of ministries including door-to-door witnessing, prayer walks, VBS, living water (handing out cold, clean water), “Ask the Lord” (the kids would spend half and hour or so in prayer and then do what they felt God was leading them to do), and construction. It was awesome to see how God worked in mighty ways through our students on this trip. I am happy to report that because these students were willing to move themselves out of their comfort zones and share their faith, four people they shared with prayed to receive Christ and have been put in contact with their local churches.

InChWesta – February 2008
02.01.2008

To begin, I want to say a huge “thank you” to everyone for the fellowship that you had for Heidi and me. We deeply appreciate the kind words and gifts, support and encouragement that you gave us. I am really bummed that I was not able to make it (due to illness), but I hear Heidi put on quite the show with her imitations! Thanks a ton—we appreciate it!

It is time for the M&M fundraiser! “What is it?” you may be asking. Well, it is a three-week fundraiser starting Sunday, February 10. We hand out tubes of mini-M&Ms, you eat the M&Ms and then fill the tubes with quarters (they hold $14 worth of quarters). You turn them back in, and all the proceeds go to support our summer mission trip to Matamoras, Mexico. We have a group of 13 that will be going there in late June! Thanks in advance for your support, and, as always, enjoy the M&Ms!

In Christ,
Josh Robertson

InChWesta – January 2008
01.01.2008

As we move into and through the Christmas season, I would like to ask you for a gift. The gift that would mean the most to me is if you would join us in prayer for the Youth’s Winter Retreat, January 18—20. It will be held at Ponderosa Retreat Center, and it’s called “ICE Bound 08”. The theme for the weekend is “Revolutionary Love,” and it will include talks from my former youth pastor, who is an excellent communicator. We will be playing snow football and other games, going tubing, and have a bunch of crazy and fun times.

Here is what I desire your prayer for. I have challenged the students to each bring at least one friend on the retreat. Pray that they have the courage to invite their friends and that both they and their friends will be challenged and changed. I believe God is going to do big things with this weekend, and I want you to join us in prayer for it. I look forward in excited anticipation to see the work that God is going to do. Thanks for joining us in prayer!
In Christ,
Josh Robertson

InChWesta – December 2007
12.01.2007

First, I want to express a huge thanks from Heidi and myself for the unbelievable generosity all of you showed in the Love Offering for Staff Appreciation. We were blown away by your kindness and support! Thank you!

I want to update you as to what is going on with the Youth. We have begun our small groups, which meet on Sunday nights. Students break up into these groups to talk about the message that was given. It has been awesome to see how effective this has been! I have heard great things from both the small group leaders and from the students.

InChWesta - October 2007
09.27.2007

Flocking

The Youth are very close to being finished with their work on the Youth House! In order to be able to get everything done, we’ve decided to do a fundraiser. We are going to bring back...FLOCKING! “What is flocking?,” you might ask. Basically, it is that you may wake up in the morning to about 50 pink flamingos in your yard! Sounds like fun, right? If it doesn’t, do not worry, you will be able to purchase Flocking Insurance on Sunday, September 30, after the morning service. Then you can rest assured that no pink flamingos will end up in your yard. The cost for this insurance is $25.

INCHWESTA - September 2007
08.23.2007

The youth are working hard to get the youth house remodeled and looking the way they want it to! They have lots of great ideas, and we hope to be finished in a month or so. When we are, we will have an open house on a Sunday to show it off. For many of you, it may be the first time you have seen the youth house! We are excited for these changes that we believe will make the house a comfortable and inviting place for students to come and hear the saving message of Jesus Christ.

We are looking for several items that will help furnish the house; if you can help us, we will be glad to take them off of your hands:

- Mini-fridge
- Coffee machines
- Camping chairs
- Book shelves
- Bean bags
- CD player
- TVs
- Video game systems
- Curtains and curtain rods

Give me a call or email me if you have any of these items available and would like to donate them to the youth house. Thanks for everything!

In Christ,

Josh Robertson

INCHWESTA - August 2007
08.23.2007

InChWeSta has been staying busy this past month with several events. The youth did an outreach at Clement Park, where they handed out over 200 bottles of water. Many people were very appreciative and surprised by the gift that had no strings attached, only students wanting to show people the love of Christ on a hot day!

The youth also went to the Sonshine Festival in Willmar, Minnesota, where we had a great time seeing over 100 bands with 20,000 fans! Not to mention it was in the great state of MINNESOTA! The youth also had a lock-in and went to Faith Day at Coors Field.

May 2007 INCHWESTA
05.14.2007

We would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who attended the INCHWESTA dinner and silent auction. It was a huge success thanks to the generosity shown by all of you. Also a special thanks to all the Sunday school departments for putting together amazing baskets! All of them were great, thanks for the time and effort! When everything was said and done the youth raised a little over $1,400! This money will be used for both the World Changers mission trip to Gallup, New Mexico, in June, as well as to help with youth outreach events. Thanks again to everyone. We all appreciate your generous support!

April 2007 INCHWESTA
04.01.2007

Have you ever thought about working with the youth ministry here at ARBC? If your answer is “yes”, “maybe”, or “why would I ever want to do that?” we will be having a meeting just for you! The meeting will be Sunday, April 29, at 4:00 p.m. in the youth house. This could be a weekly leadership opportunity where you lead a small group or it could be an occasional type of leadership. If you think you might be interested or you just want to hear about our passion and plan for INCHWESTA I would encourage you to come to this meeting. We have an amazing group of students who are looking to grow in their faith and reach out to their friends, and we would love for you to be a part of this amazing ministry opportunity. Hope to see you on the 29th!

March 2007 INCHWESTA
02.24.2007

All is going well in the realm of the youth! God has been continuing to work in and through all of our lives to cause us to be more and more like Him! I want to thank everyone who helped us out with the Discipleship Now Weekend! We are especially grateful to all those who opened up their houses to us for the weekend!

Along with our regular activities, I wanted to share with you a couple of events that are coming up for INCHWESTA in the month of March. On March 4, INCHWESTA will be meeting at the youth house at 3:00 p.m. to head down to Colorado Springs for the Winter Jam concert featuring Steven Curtis Chapman, Jeremy Camp, Hawk Nelson, and Sanctus Real. Also, March 23-24 will be the INCHWESTA ski retreat. We will be meeting at the church at 5:00 p.m. and leaving shortly after that. We will be returning Saturday in the late evening. Youth can sign up now at the youth house!

The theme verse for the Discipleship Now Weekend was John 3:30; which states, “He must become greater, I must become less.” I hope that it is the prayer in all of our lives that Christ becomes greater and greater, and we become less and less so that all glory will be given to the only One who deserves it!

In Christ,
Josh

Feb 2007 INCHWESTA
02.15.2007

Well, it is hard to believe that it has been over a month since my first Sunday. I want to say thank you to all the youth and families who have made us feel so welcomed over the past month. It has been a blessing to begin to get to know everyone. We feel blessed to be here!

I wanted to give you a little look into what the youth have been up to over the past month. On Sunday mornings we have been looking at different religions, and learning how we can share our faith with those of different religions. On Sunday nights, even in the snow, we have been having a blast doing a variety of activities including mafia, ultimate spoons, and other games. On Wednesday nights we play games, have a time of worship, and a time of teaching. Currently we are going through the book of James.

The youth have decided on a t-shirt design for the youth t-shirts. On the front they will have the youth group name, INCHWESTA, and on the back top it says, “ARBC Youth,” and underneath that is says, “In Christ We Stand” which is what INCHWESTA means. If you would be interested in ordering a shirt, or if you would like to see the design, please let me know in the first week of February. They will cost $16 each.

I want to close with a passage in James that presents the central teaching of the book, James 1:22. “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” It is my prayer for all of us, including myself, that we would live out our faith actively and live according to the scriptures!

In Christ,

Josh Robertson

Welcome Josh Robertson
01.08.2007

My name is Josh Robertson, and I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am the new Interim Youth Pastor here at ARBC. I am very excited about the opportunity that God has given my wife and I to be able to work with the youth. It has been a pleasure to begin to meet everyone at ARBC.

My wife Heidi and I have been married for a year and a half; both of us grew up in the great state of Minnesota (go Vikings!) Contrary to popular thought, it is not a sin to cheer for a football team other than the Broncos. Heidi and I moved out to Denver at the end of August so that I could begin attending Denver Seminary. I am pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree with an emphasis in Pastoral Counseling. Heidi is extremely busy as she is a nanny for a family of four boys, the youngest 4 months, the oldest 13! Heidi and I have loved our time in Colorado so far, especially the mountain biking!

In working with the youth group it is my goal to bring all aspects of life together. I think it is important for the youth to be able to participate in a wide-range of events anywhere from Bible studies to Paint Ball and everything in between. It is my prayer that through these activities the youth group will be united together glorifying God in everything we do. Also, I wanted to let you know that the youth group has decided on a name; it is InChwesta, which means, In Christ we Stand.

My ultimate prayer for the youth is that in some way their involvement with the youth group will draw them closer and closer to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is my desire that they grow close to Christ and as a result that they will share their faith with all those who God brings into their lives. I hope that you will join us in prayer for the students that God has blessed us with. We look forward to meeting all of you as we strive together to glorify God in all that we do.

In Christ,
Josh Robertson

12.19.06 - 2-for-1 Youth Christmas Event
12.13.2006

Part 1 – 6P to 8P

The Youth Christmas Party that was scheduled for 12.15.06 has been moved to 12.19.06. We’ll be meeting at the Youth House at 6PM to decorate the Christmas Tree, have some food and the customary White Elephant Gift Exchange
The Gifts
The gift should be valued around $5, wrapped and something someone might actually want - ex. a used toliet bowl brush, while funny, would not qualify.
The Rules
1. Contribute a Gift and participate in the exchange.
2. Draw numbers
3. On the first turn, #1 chooses a gift, opens it, and all admire it.
4. On the second turn, #2 gets the choice of "stealing" any
unwrapped gift (#1's) or choosing a wrapped one. If #2 steals #1's gift, then #1 must open a wrapped gift.
5. On the third turn, #3 gets the choice of "stealing" any unwrapped gift (#1's or #2's) or choosing a wrapped one.

The game continues based on the following:
1. If a gift is stolen from you, you can steal a gift or open a wrapped one.
2. The turn proceeds until a wrapped gift is chosen.
3. A gift cannot be immediately stolen back from the guest who just stole it.
4. Gifts must be kept visible and you must hold them up when requested.
5. The gift exchange ends when the last wrapped gift is opened.

Part 2 – 8P to ?

Christmas Cookies to Littleton Hospital – we’ll bake and decorate cookies from 8P to 11P, then deliver the baskets to the graveyard shift at Littleton Hospital. Students, bring one bag of toppings for the cookies (M&M’s, sprinkles, etc.) and invite your parents to come help.

12.13.06 - Youth & Parents Meeting
12.11.2006

Message from Pastor Jim
Dear Parents and Youth,

I would like to meet with you on December 13th at 5:30pm for a Question and Answer time about the youth ministry.

Since I deeply believe our youth do not need to be without a pastor, the Personnel Team has hired a part-time interim youth director (According to the By-Laws). He and his wife will meet with the youth and parents at 6:00pm.

His name is Josh Robertson and his wife’s name is Heidi. They are from Minnesota and are first year students at Denver Theological Seminary.

I do not have all of the answers much less knowing all of the questions to ask. I need you to pray, think and hear the direction in which I believe we need to proceed in regard to future staffing.

I hope to see you on Wednesday, December 13th, at the youth house at 5:30pm.

God bless,
Jim

Gene presented the following message at the conclusion of morning worship, November 26, 2006
Dear ARBC Family,

I have accepted a call to pastor Coronado Baptist Church in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. I submitted my resignation to the church and Jim accepted it on behalf of the church. My last Sunday with you will be December 10. I am sincerely grateful for the time that I have been allowed to serve you. I am honored and humbled to have had the privilege of sharing the word with you and investing a season of my life in the youth and singles of your church. Thank you very much for loving my family and me. You have taken great care of us and you will be in our prayers and memories for many years to come. May the love of God and the grace of Jesus Christ and the peace of the Holy Spirit be with you always.

Student Ministry – March 2006
03.03.2006

Dear Reader,

Let me take this opportunity to tell you about what happened in the youth ministry last month. First of all, we did our first official servanthood evangelism project. We washed 85 people’s car windows and got a wonderful response. While we were doing it we were able to share the love of Christ with several people and I got a few phone calls afterwards from people who were blessed by this simple act of kindness. We will continue to do these projects each month, both to show the love of Christ to people in practical ways and to increase awareness in the community of the presence of our church. Any of you are welcome to join us when we do these projects. Our next one is March 4.

Coming up in March we have our Oscar Night and Youth Ski Retreat. The youth also have an important fund-raising event for summer missions. The silent auction youth dinner is going to be held on Sunday, March 12, at 12:00. Please join us at this event and help us pay for X-Fuge. If you or your Sunday School class have any questions, feel free to contact me. Finally, the Thursday night young adult Bible Study is being held at both 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. to better accommodate the conflicting schedules of those who wish to attend. Thank you and good-night.

Grace and Peace,

Gene

Student Ministry – February 2006
02.17.2006

Welcome to February!
I have always liked this month because it sounds different than its spelled. It has that silent “R” which gives it an aura of mystery and danger. It’s risky. Also, it’s a lot shorter than other months but it seems to get the same amount of work done which makes it by far the most efficient of all the twelve or thirteen months. Not only that but February is the month that Candy and I began dating, so it’s only fitting that February would be a great month for the youth ministry of ARBC.

Frasier Tubing Hill - 01.28.06
01.24.2006

Scream Like a Little Kid

Join us on Saturday, 01.28.06, for a fun-filled excursion of tubing at Frasier Tubing Hill (FTH), Frasier, CO. We will meet at the Youth House at [TBD] and take the church vans for an hour long session of screaming like little kids going down the Tubing hill. Tubing cost is $14/hour for students between the ages of 7 -15 and $16/hour over 15 -- credit cards are not accepted at FTH! Prices include the use of a tube and tow rope. Last year, we did about 8 trips in our hour session. The Youth Group has done night tubing at FTH for the last several years and it's always been a blast.

Students should dress for cold weather (boots, coats, gloves, face protection, sun screen, etc,). Students should also bring snack food for the trip to FTH. After tubing we will be having a meal in the Winter Park area and students should bring extra money to cover their meal. We should be back at the church around [TBD].

In order to attend this activity, all students need to turn in a completed 2006 Activities Permission & Medical Release form by Wednesday, January 18, 2006.

Student Ministry – January 2006
01.01.2006

Dear Readers and Fans,

I always wonder every New Year if this is the year that Jesus will return. Even if he does not, there will still be a lot of good things that will happen in 2006. The youth are going to have a Disciple Now Weekend in February. There is a conference coming in April that is geared towards the young adults of our Sunday school class and Bible Study. The youth will be going to San Diego for M-Fuge in July. These are just a few of the things that will be going on in the coming year.

Student Ministry – December 2005
12.19.2005

Dear Readers and Fans,

The youth just got back from Dare 2 Share and it was a very rewarding experience. Many of the students who went got an opportunity to share their faith with people right around our church. Conferences like that can be great catalysts for outreach efforts. We are able to reinforce some of these applied ministry principles through things like Sharing & Caring and Operation Christmas Child.

Student Ministry – November 2005
11.02.2005

Unfortunately for many of you by the time you read this I will still be alive. However, let’s not focus on the negatives. There are many good things going on in the youth ministry despite the fact that I am heavily involved. We are well into our study on the book of Revelation which is an especially exciting book to study for young people.

Student Ministry - October 2005
10.02.2005

Let me use this opportunity to bring you up to date on what is happening in the youth group. We spent most of the summer studying Christology. We had five lessons each on the person of Christ and the work of Christ. We are just beginning a teaching series on the book of Revelation. We are splitting up between junior high and high school on Sunday mornings and Candy, Theresa Martens, John Declet, and I are rotating teaching the junior high. Please pray for these teachers as they undertake this responsibility. The Youth group is looking at going either to Chicago or San Diego for M-Fuge next year and we are looking forward to the many ministry opportunities we have during the holidays like Operation Christmas Child and Sharing and Caring. Also, because I am new to this area I am having some trouble finding places that will allow us to do Servanthood Evangelism. I am confident God will open up some doors but it is taking longer than I had anticipated. I have put several calls in to various places and am waiting to hear back from them. I would really appreciate your prayers in this regard. I believe this is an important thing for the youth to be involved in.

Student Ministry - September 2005
08.30.2005

Back to School. This ranks highly among the worst three-word phrases in the English language. Thankfully, this is the first semester that I have not been in school in some form or another in twenty-five years. One of my goals in life is to be retired longer than I was in school. The irony of it is that my son begins his schooling even as I end mine. I walked Caleb to his first day of school this morning and tried to think back to mine. I couldn’t remember it. Another irony is that even though I am not in school, I still spend my weekdays behind a desk. I feel like I’ve spent my whole life behind a desk. I think as a joke I might leave instructions for my body to be buried sitting at a desk six feet underground with a tombstone that reads, “Here lies Gene Washburne: Whether it was at school, work or the grave, when it came to sleeping at his desk, nobody was more accomplished than Gene.”

M-Fuge was great! I can’t believe I made it through the week without being pranked, although the morning I woke up inside my duffel bag on a bus to Memphis may have been an exception. Kevin told me it was a bizarre accident but I’m starting to wonder. That experience aside, the trip was a lot of fun.

Student Ministry - July 2005
07.15.2005

My first month here has been a positive learning experience and I thank God for how he used his rod and the church staff to comfort and instruct me. The first two weeks I was here, I had to work at my desk without a chair. It was a staff initiation and they told me that when I got to the point where I didn’t want a chair anymore than I would be ready for one. I’m still not entirely sure what that means but I finally got a chair, so I guess I’m initiated. Also, another important learning exercise happened when we went out to lunch as a staff. I was told I had to wait until after the staff finished eating before I could order my food. At first it seemed a little exclusivist, but I soon learned that if I didn’t have anything in front of me to eat, that I could better focus on their conversation and glean wisdom from it. So despite the initial hardships, I am grateful for the learning and growth that has taken place even in these few short weeks.

Candy and I continue to be overwhelmed by your generosity. The “pounding” was a wonderful demonstration of your support and care for us. We thank you all so much. I also continue to be impressed by the youth group. They are eager to learn and to serve. We had a great turnout for the car wash and raised almost $400. Also, the youth have been the ones primarily responsible for gathering and preparing items for the garage sale. Many of them are also going to help out in various areas of Vacation Bible School. I can’t wait to go with them to M-fuge and see further evidence of Christ’s presence in their lives. Please pray for the youth group and its leaders. Pray that God will use us for His glory. Also, pray for Karen Ammon and I as we begin a ministry for college age singles. Karen will be teaching a Sunday School class and I will be leading a Thursday night Bible study specifically for this age group. If you know of anyone who would be interested in attending please tell her or him to contact Karen or myself.

In closing, here is something you might enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it please forget reading it and forgive me for writing it.

Top Ten Things Overheard at Youth Garage Sale

10) “This youth minister is marked 50 cents. I’ll give you half that.”

9) “Which garage is on sale?”

8) “Are the skittles and pretzels in this couch included or extra?”

7) “How could anyone want to get rid of a lava lamp this nice?”

6) “Do you have layaway?”

5) “If the pastor had preached a sermon on garage sales, we might have had a better response.”

4) “Is this how much Jesus would charge for this plush Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle doll?”

3) “I bet if I wait until after the holidays, these inflatable reindeer will be cheaper.”

2) “I’m going to spend my tithe on this Elvis commemorative plate. After all the money goes to the youth group.”

1) “How much do you want for this Prayer of Jabez shot glass?

Student Ministry - June 2005
05.27.2005

I do not think that my family arriving here in Colorado on the same week in which Star Wars Episode III premiered is a coincidence. While I am fully aware that many of you are more excited about seeing Star Wars than you are about my family’s arrival, (and I totally understand, by the way), I think these two events are related. I think that God, in His Sovereignty, willed for my family to arrive the week that Star Wars released so that I could tell you this: I am a huge Star Wars fan and I have been looking forward to seeing the third episode for years, but I am far more excited to be here with you than I am even to see the new Star Wars film. In all seriousness, being a part of your church is one of the greatest blessings I have ever received and I am so glad to be here. As I have looked back over my life’s journey so far, I believe that God has been preparing me for this very opportunity.

For many of us here God has taken us down roads that seemed hard to accept. Maybe a road that seemed uncertain, dangerous, or sometimes even crazy. Well, God has taken me down many roads in my life that seemed muddy along the way but somehow became crystal clear once the road had been taken.

Outreach, outreach, outreach...
02.08.2004

February and March are Outreach Focus Months for the youth ministry at Arapahoe Road. That means we have several events designed for you to reach out to your unchurched friends and invite them to a Youth Ministry Activity. From the Superbowl Party to Bowling Night, and from the ski trips to the snow tubing adventure, each of these are designed for you to bring an unchurched friend in order to introduce them to some good Christian fellowship. Will you take this opportunity to look around you and find someone who needs what you already have? I hope so. Check out the upcoming events / activities and let's each make an effort to reach those who need to be reached!

Youth Sunday, Feb 22nd
02.08.2004

We are so proud of our youth and their commitment to the Lord and spiritual matters. They have worked hard on discussing worship and planning for this Sunday. You will see them fill various roles this day ushering, praying, singing, testimonies, drama, etc. However, your role in praying for this day and then your active worship participation is vital.

May God be glorified through this special youth-led worship service.
