And you will have the joy of leading worship, encouraging and influencing people in worship beyond the walls of this church. Please know that what we are about is WORSHIP, not performance. God Speaking - A Christmas Musical
12.01.2009

It's probably safe to say that Christmas is everyone's favorite time of the year, but it's also the time of year when life moves faster, stress is greater, and the chaos of the season can easily drown out the voice of the Prince of Peace. It is this time of year, more than any other, that we need to stop and hear God Speaking.

God Speaking reminds us that, from the very beginning of time, all our failures and fears were on the heart of God as He sent His only Son to bring us hope and the confidence necessary to live life to the fullest.

Join us on December 13 at the morning service - 10:35AM, as together we pause for these few moments to listen to the voice of God Speaking.

October 2009
09.24.2009

It’s hard to believe that summer is over and fall (early winter for those that live in Colorado) is here! This is my favorite time of year because of the beauty of God’s creation. It is also my favorite time of year because of the upcoming three months of worship services. There is still time to join Adult Choir or the ARBC Orchestra and participate in these upcoming services. If you can match pitch, consider joining the choir. If you can play an instrument, consider joining the orchestra. You can be a leader in worship!

WHAT IS AN “OLD SONG”?

Part 3 of a 3-part Series

As I have pointed out in my two previous columns, an “old song” is not just relevant to a person’s age, but more so to that person’s life experiences within or without the church. The SOLUTION is not to abandon any of the musical styles that we currently use in praising the Lord but rather to embrace the new as well as the old.

We should realize that, as each generation ages, fewer of their songs will be recognized. In the future, only a few of the very best examples of all styles will remain. Those that will stand the test of time will be the ones that are not just the most representative of a generation’s musical style but, more importantly, those that are based on profound Biblical truth.

Thus, I believe that in 200 years, Christians will still be singing Martin Luther’s A Mighty Fortress is Our God (1500’s), Fanny Crosby’s To God Be the Glory (1800’s) and Terry York’s Worthy of Worship (1980’s). The vast majority of the future’s praise and worship music HAS YET TO BE WRITTEN by those not yet born. I believe that thrills God. It does me!

WHAT IS AN “OLD SONG”?

Part 2 of a 3-part Series

Last month I pointed out that few hymns and songs have stood the test of time. Even the beloved Fannie Crosby has fewer hymns in the newest edition of The Baptist Hymnal than in the previous one. Because of my age and life circumstances, I know a lot of Christian music and truly love most of it. However, each year it becomes more difficult to plan a “blended” worship service for Arapahoe Road Baptist Church.

Many times I will include an “old” hymn in our morning worship service only to find out that many people age 55 and younger do not know it. Some people have come from non-Southern Baptist backgrounds, and others are new Christians. Some people come from a contemporary church music background and have never sung the “old” hymns. To some of our members, the “old” songs are the hymns they grew up with in the 1920s and 30s. To other members, the “old” songs are hymns such as #243, “Sweet, Sweet Spirit,” written in the early 1960s, and #12, “Great is the Lord,” written in the early 80s. Still, to other members, the “old” songs are the ones that we learned just 12 months ago!

WHAT IS AN “OLD SONG”?
Part 1 of a 3-part Series

I. AT MY AGE (almost 56), DO I KNOW WHAT AN “OLD SONG” IS?

My dad was a Southern Baptist pastor. From the late 1950s, I had the hymnal memorized from cover to cover. During the 1960s, a visiting youth choir from Texas shocked our church in Rapid City with a musical—“Good News”. For one year, in the late 1960s, I was a member of ARBC and remember Katy Vogel directing me in the youth choir (Katy: remember “Sunday’s Child”?). There were no Christian radio stations at that time, but a local Denver station began broadcasting “contemporary” Christian music late on Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings. Does anybody remember “Here Comes Jesus”?

During the early 1970s, I majored in piano at Oklahoma Baptist University and was exposed to much classical music. Since the mid-1970s, I have been on staff and actively involved in the music ministry of Southern Baptist churches. So now, allow me to express an opinion.

Over the centuries and decades a few “new” songs have stood the test of time, but most have not. I read where the great gospel hymn writer, Fanny Crosby, in the late 1800s authored between 8,000 and 9,000 gospel hymn texts. Yet only 17 are in our current hymnal. Fifteen are in the newest edition. My guess is there will be fewer still in the next hymnal. But don’t lose heart!

NEXT MONTH: Part 2 of 3 What is My Point?

Children’s Sunday School Music

The children, grades 1-6, did a sweet job in singing during one of our morning worship services last month. Now it is time to do it again! However, this time the 4 & 5 year old Sunday School class will also be singing. The preschoolers have already begun working on their songs. The 1-6 Grade children will work on their songs for four Sundays beginning November 12. Each family will receive a packet that contains a wordsheet and a CD. Parents, please help us teach your children these songs. Children will sing in worship on Sunday morning, December 10.

CAN IT BE - 2006?
12.29.2005

CAN IT BE?

There are several hymns and worship songs that use the words,
“can it be?” (“And Can It Be?”, “Amazing Love, How Can It Be?”) Songs such as these generally refer to the love of Christ extending to
us and then our disbelief that He truly loves us-in spite of our sin.
May I never loose sight of the holiness of God and that in HIS sight I am valued!

CAN IT BE?

Can it be that on the very Sunday last month that we recognized our Technical Crew that we have technical problems? That was not due to operator problems- however it was somewhat funny! Let me say, once again, that this crew is the best that I have worked with anywhere. And that includes 5 churches and 27 years.

Charles Schultz Philosophy
11.02.2005

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read straight through, and you’ll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.

These are not second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

WEIRD AUGUST

August, in my “book” is always weird. Summer is coming to an end, various schools are resuming classes, families are rushing to finish up vacations, and it is hard to find out who will be at worship on what Sunday!!! However, worship service attendance remains strong! I have been so surprised to see a fairly full choir loft on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. August is weird. I can’t wait for the fall!!

BEHIND THE SCENES
04.14.2005

Every Sunday we have marvelous help “behind the scenes” of our worship services. These men and women spend hours with the musicians in rehearsal both on Wednesday nights and early Sunday mornings. Their expertise and alertness can be a blessing. The lack of it can be a real distraction to worship. Fortunately, we have qualified people who also have sweet cooperative spirits! Thank you Fred Starks for heading up this special team of people that include Fred, Mike Beatty, Marvin Hutton, and Wil Powell. This month we welcome Kim Corzine, Nick Martens and Craig Howell to this team. This team is kind of like “faith”-the “evidence of things not seen”. Thank you for your commitment and good work.

EASTER COMES EARLY
02.28.2005

The first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of Spring-that is March 27 this year! Although every Sunday is a celebration of that day when Christ arose-Easter is always a special Sunday in worship. Yes, I know, this year is different. Many schools are on spring break that week and our mission team will be gone to the Ukraine. However, all of that doesn’t change the spiritual significance of that celebration-Jesus the firstborn of the resurrection!

"Another Year is Dawning" - 2005
01.02.2005

In many churches, the first Sunday of the new year wouldn’t be complete without singing Fances Havergal’s great “Another Year is Dawning”. Its words reflect the deep consecration that marked her poems. Frances considered every New Year’s Day a never-to-be-missed opportunity of rededication to Christ, and several New Year’s hymns came from her pen.

What a thrill it has been to work with Lee and Shawna in our music ministry. As our church pianist, Shawna has exemplified the rare combination of true talent and a genuine Christian spirit. Working alongside her at each rehearsal and worship service has been a joy. Lee has led us in worship on the guitar and made those worship songs even more meaningful. Children's Choirs Update
05.07.2004

The two children's choirs that met from January-May were "successful" enough that we will implement those ministries again this fall. Let me say thank you to my wife, Kimberly, and daughter, Stephanie, for their great work with the Music Time Choir. In addition, thank you to Dolores Sears, Katy Vogel and Joanna Troyansky who assisted mein Music Makers Choir. Your skills and dedications are greatly appreciated.

The Music Maker Choir (grades 1-6) will be singing Mother's Day morning, May 9. Children will practice in the auditorium at 8:30am.

Orchestra
05.07.2004

On Sunday, May 16, we will have various members of our congregation form an orchestra that will accompany several hymns. Music will be mailed out the first week of May. We will rehearse Wednesday night, May 12, from 8pm-9pm. If you can play an instrument and have not been contacted, please let me know and I will get you some music. Hopefully, we will hear from this group on a monthly basis.

Good Friday Service
03.30.2004

This year we will be having a Good Friday Service at 7:00 pm on April 9th. It will be a very somber time to reflect upon the sacrifice of our Lord. Music, scripture, candlelight, introspection and the observance of the Lord's Supper will all have a profound affect upon the worshipper. Plan to arrive and depart in quietness.

03.30.2004

Easter morning promises to be a time of celebration of our Risen Lord (as every Sunday should be!) We plan to have only one morning worship service so plan appropriately. See Easter Morning Suggestions for additional information.

Music Time Choir
03.30.2004

The last Music Time Choir (age 4/5) rehersal before dismissing for the summer will be Wednesday, April 21st. Parents are invited to join the children this evening at 6:00pm for a time of refreshments, songs, and music activities. We greatly appreciate Kim Corzine and Stephanie Atherton teaching the children this term. During May, the 4/5 age children will be cared for in the nursery area. The older children's choir last rehersal will be May 19th. Both children's choirs will resume September 15th.

Music Ministry Update
02.26.2004

March always seems to be an unusual time in planning worship. The short humdrum midwinter days appear to be coming to an end. (Although March is generally a heavy snow month and can drastically affect church attendance). Easter is not quite here yet. And it seems that everyone who has school-aged children are trying to find time for a Spring Break vacation. However, let me encourage you not to forget about worship! There is nothing quite like coming together with Christian brothers and sisters to praise God and to hear from him!

Children's Choirs Off to a Great Start!
01.29.2004

Both children's choirs have had a successful beginning. The Music Time Choir (age 4-5) has had an average of 7 children between the two rehersals and Music Makers (grades 1-6) will be joining with the Adult Choir on Sunday, February 1 and singing the choir anthem, "Blessed Jesus." Arapahoe Road Baptist Church has great children and we are so fortunate to work with them. Thank you to Joanna Troyansky who assisted me during January and February in Music Makers!

A Word from your Music Minister
01.10.2004

Dear Arapahoe Road Baptist Church Family,

Thank you for the invitation to become your Minister of Music/Administration for your vote of confidence on December 28. I look forward to moving into the offices during the month of January. As you interim music minister it was my joy to serve you from June until December. What wonderful times of worship we experienced. Thank you for your support and encouragement during that interim time. Now we move into a new relationship—one that I hope that you are as excited about as I am. May God richly bless these days ahead.

New Children's Choirs
01.08.2004

Mark Corzine, Minister of Music & Administration, announces two new Children's Choirs that will begin Wednesday, January 14th:

Music Time Choir
For Sunday School class ages 4 & 5, this choir will be directed by Kim Corzine, Mark’s wife. Kim has over 20 years of experience in directing preschool choirs and has attended many conferences specializing in this age group. Their daughter, Stephanie, will also be teaching. Stephanie has grown up through a graded choir program and has assisted in this age group for several years. The Music Time Choir will be concentrating on music experiences and on rhythm. Room location will be announced.

Music Makers Choir
For Sunday School class grades 1-6, this choir will be directed by Mark for the first few months. Several of our church musicians will be serving as teachers. The Music Makers will be concentrating on tone matching, melody, and rhythm. There will be several performing opportunities for this particular choir. They will meet in room 105.

This will be a great opportunity for your child. It’s fun and it’s free.

We’ll plan on seeing you Wednesday, January 14, at 6pm!

Worship & Music
09.30.2003

What a joy it has been to serve as your interim worship and music minister during the summer months. As in all churches, the "here and gone" summer tendency prevailed here as well. However, God still richly blessed and we had some glorious worship services!!! As we enter these fall, winter, and holiday months let me encourage you to join us.

The Church Family at worship is always the most important "choir" and will always be the featured "performers" (for God).

However, if you are an adult and can match pitch let me encourage you to join us for Adult Choir on Wednesdays at 7:15. We will begin holiday music soon.

The Children are working on a musical "The Great Kingdom Caper" on Sundays at 5:30 for drama and 6:30 for the music. A presentation will be scheduled for later October. Regular children's choirs will begin in November.

For now, the Youth Musicians are meeting on an individual and small group basis with me and will be utilized in worship beginning in October.

Small groups of Instrumentalists will be practicing on a scheduled basis and blessing us in worship during these exciting upcoming months. Thank you for your encouragement and continued prayer support!

Mark
