Based on a recommendation from our Deacons, an Ordination Council has been formed (made up of active deacons and other ordained ministers) for the purpose of examining Josh Robertson on July 12 for possible ordination to the gospel ministry. He will be ordained that same evening, based upon his passing the Council’s examination. Then the church will vote on ordaining him. It is very important that we have a quorum that night! Please plan to attend. There will be a dessert and coffee fellowship afterwards.

ARBC 2009 Summer Love-In-Action
06.24.2009

July 5 - August 2

In September, ARBC will once again be sending a mission team to Hungary. One way we can be of support to the team is to participate in a project that involves their work with University of Gyor students. We would like to distribute gift bags containing:

  • pens, pencils, highlighters
  • sticky notes and small pads of paper

This mission effort is aimed at establishing a caring presence on campus, developing relationships through which to share the gospel, and promoting home Bible studies. And to think, we can all have a part in it!

Be watching for our display in the foyer.

Did you know that preparing a Sunday School lesson is very similar to cooking? For both, you have to read what is needed – ingredients or lesson supplies. Then you read and follow the steps in the plan. In one instance, you’re serving food for the body, and the other, you are serving food for spiritual growth. For both, preparation is an important key to making something great.

This month I want to talk about something different. A couple of months ago I held the first Body Life Journey workshop. At the end of the workshop, we ate a lunch that I prepared for all the participants—spice rubbed chicken breast tacos with grilled poblano peppers, BBQ onions, and coleslaw. For dessert, it was peach skillet shortcake. As of this printing, we had not yet gotten permission to print that recipe, so let’s talk about a similar dish:
Grilled Citrus Chicken
Here are the ingredients and steps to making this dish:

  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil, plus more for coating grill
  • 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard (or Dijon)
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 pounds chicken breasts (boneless or bone-in, with or without skin*)

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together brown sugar, 1/3 cup oil, mustard, vinegar, garlic, lemon and lime juices and salt to make marinade.
  2. Pour marinade into a resealable plastic freezer bag. Add chicken, seal and turn to coat pieces. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
  3. When ready to cook, remove chicken from bag, letting excess marinade drip off. Discard leftover marinade.
  4. Pour oil onto a clean cloth and wipe the cold grill to prevent sticking. Position the grill 4-6 inches from heat.
  5. Cook chicken over medium heat for 15-35 minutes (see TIP below), to an internal temperature of 160°, or until juice is no longer pink the in the thickest part. Turn frequently to prevent burning.
Makes 6 servings. *TIP: Cooking time guidelines: boneless, skinless chicken breasts: 15-20 minutes; bone-in breasts: 20-25 minutes.

I want to say a huge thanks to all of you who participated in our youth auction! Your generosity raised $685 to help send our students to Centrifuge at Glorieta in July. Thank you! Be sure to put them to work! Also, a couple of the students mentioned that if you didn’t win an auction but still want to hire them, you can do that, and the money will still go to this great cause. Just contact me if you want to set something up.

Heidi and I want to say thanks for all of the recognition and encouragement we received when you celebrated my graduation from Denver Seminary. Thank you for the commentary set you gave me and the gift card you got for Heidi. We really appreciate them both! Also, thanks for the cake, congratulations and cards that we received. Your support means a lot to us. Thank you again.

In Christ, Josh

ne Parson’s Opinion

One day in the Garden of Eden, Adam asked Eve, “Do you really and truly love me?” “Who else!?,” Eve replied.

A Catholic priest asked a Jewish rabbi, “When are you going to have a ham sandwich with me?” “On your wedding day,” replied the rabbi.

What did Adam and Eve do when they were expelled from Eden? They raised Cain!

A pastor was called by the IRS about a $25,000 contribution claimed by a church member. The IRS man asked, “”Did he really give that amount?” The pastor reflected a moment, then said, “I’d rather not say right now, but if you’ll call back tomorrow, I am quite sure the answer will be yes!”

Notice on church nursery door: “Dear Parents: Children not claimed within 10 minutes after church is dismissed will be sold!”

Saint Peter and Satan were arguing about who was going to repair the hole in the wall between heaven and hell. Peter said to Satan, “You’re going to fix that wall or I’m going to sue you!” Confidently, Satan replied, “Where are you going to find a lawyer?”

Have you had a laugh? I hope you enjoyed at least one of the jokes. If you didn’t think the above were jokes (I know you, and some of you didn’t!), all I can say is:

Sign on an Arizona church bulletin board in the month of August: “You think it’s hot here!?!”

I do hope you got a chuckle or at least a smile. You see, my brother and sister, most of the time we Christians don’t act like we are free and forgiven and on our way to heaven. Many Christians act like they have been vaccinated with lemon juice.

Now, I do not mean we are to be giddy in the face of pain. But you see, we really are deep down, fundamentally different from the pagans.

We are new creations in Christ Jesus. We know some secrets they do not know, and the being and the knowing ought to make us live life on an entirely different plane.

So, my Christian friend, relax a little and laugh the laughter of the redeemed. Jesus redeemed you, brother and sister. What could be more important than redemption? What could be more freeing than redemption?

See you on the Lord’s Day,
Jim
