Praying for Masks to be Removed While these masks and costumes are often cute and make us smile and laugh, I want to talk about a different kind of mask that many teenagers wear. This is a mask, or even multiple masks, that they put on and take off at different times. Many in the church today have a Christian mask, a school mask, a sports mask, a work mask, a friend’s mask, and maybe even more. My hope and prayer is that through InChWeSta, these students will begin to see that Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ that goes beyond the confines of the church building on Sundays and Wednesdays, that being a Christian means that they are a Christian at school, on the sports fields, in their jobs, and with their friends. Please join me in praying that our students will begin to remove the masks that they wear and live for Jesus Christ every day of the week and in all the places God brings them! October 200809.24.2008
Some may ask, “Why wasn’t I asked about what I’m interested in learning?” I considered that, and then I looked at our rolls. We have 600+ names on our rolls with around 230 attending every Sunday. If only half of those in worship responded with two suggestions, I could have had 200 different suggestions. Considering duplication, it could have been a large number. There had to be a better way. It all began with prayer. Next I turned to the Bible. Specifically, Galatians 5:22-23 and Matthew 28:19-20. I also considered the five basic functions of the church – worship, evangelism, fellowship, discipleship, and ministry. The last item I used as a guide was the ARBC mission statement printed inside every Sunday’s worship guide. Then I asked myself, “Using this specific criterion, what are the factors in what a fruit-bearing Christian looks like and/or does?” Continue reading "October 2008" Posted by arbc at 11:16 AM | Comments (0)

It has been said you should have three people whom you want to talk straight with you: 1. Your doctor – you want an honest report from your doctor—no beating around the bush for results and treatments. 2. Your auto mechanic – we want an honest mechanic who will tell us just how much it will cost to repair our cars. 3. Your Pastor (pastoral staff) – your spiritual health should be a top priority in your life, so that you become what God desires of you. This is what I’m writing about – change. The whole idea of change can become confusing, because there are so many churches and messages telling us that it’s okay to overlook certain aspects of ourselves or our actions. In an age of tolerance, we are bombarded with the message of overlooking and/or tolerating sin. Ask yourself Christian, does God really want me to overlook the “little” sins in my life? You know as well as I that the answer is “No!” Would you expect your doctor to tell you, “Don’t worry, it’s only a ‘little’ cancer”? Of course not. The first step to seeing real sanctification, real change in yourself, is to recognize sin in your life. Loved ones, if we are not willing to face our own sins in the mirror, then we won’t change. God is ready, willing and able to do His part—the actual changing—but you have to do your part as well. My first step is to recognize what displeases God and your first step is to recognize what displeases God. Face up to it, call it what it is, don’t soften it and admit it to God, then confess it to a confidant. Yes, I have scripture to back that up. James 5:16 says, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.” Confessing to a confidant is a key step because that person will help you with the next step. InChWesta - September 200809.08.2008
Starting Sunday, September 7, our Youth will be going through The Gospel Journey, a reality-based video series put out by Dare2Share Ministries. In it, seven individuals go into the wilderness for seven days and go through the Gospel Message. These individuals represent a variety of beliefs including an agnostic, a minister’s kid, an atheist, a wiccan, an Episcopalian, a Presbyterian, a city girl and a preacher. After each “talk” there is a discussion time in which the individuals are able to ask questions and bring up objections based on their belief systems. A group of our students previewed this series in the spring and all agreed that it was the clearest, non-threatening presentation of the Gospel we have ever heard. I have been encouraging the students to be courageous and invite their friends to this event, which will last seven weeks. Please join us in prayer so that they will be able to do that, so their friends can come and hear the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Also be praying with us that as a result of this journey, lives would be changed for eternity. Posted by arbc at 09:35 AM | Comments (0)

There is the distinct possibility that these men and women will be in harm’s way. There are anarchists who want to disrupt the convention’s process. The police are charged with not allowing this to happen. At the very least, they will be in very stressful situations. Pray for their safety. Will you also pray for those of us who will be working downtown? Ask God to give us grace to be able to minister to these folks who protect us throughout the year. About 30 members of ARBC will be assembling 600 sandwiches a day, and several will be serving food in safe hotel rooms downtown, providing a place for the officers to “decompress.” Ask God to use us to be Jesus' hands and feet during these days. The people of God have an opportunity to minister to some very important people the week of the DNC. I hope you will not see the DNC coming to Denver as a burden, but as a providential opportunity to put into practice what we say we believe.
