MUSIC SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 11
08.30.2005

This is always an exciting in our music ministry as we dedicate another year of worship to the Lord. This Sunday also signifies that all rehearsals have resumed again, and, hopefully, most people are through traveling for awhile! God has been faithful to us at ARBC-let’s thank, praise, and worship Him in a proper fashion!
ORCHESTRA
You should receive music soon. We will play on Music Sunday, September 11.

Student Ministry - September 2005

Back to School. This ranks highly among the worst three-word phrases in the English language. Thankfully, this is the first semester that I have not been in school in some form or another in twenty-five years. One of my goals in life is to be retired longer than I was in school. The irony of it is that my son begins his schooling even as I end mine. I walked Caleb to his first day of school this morning and tried to think back to mine. I couldn’t remember it. Another irony is that even though I am not in school, I still spend my weekdays behind a desk. I feel like I’ve spent my whole life behind a desk. I think as a joke I might leave instructions for my body to be buried sitting at a desk six feet underground with a tombstone that reads, “Here lies Gene Washburne: Whether it was at school, work or the grave, when it came to sleeping at his desk, nobody was more accomplished than Gene.”

As most of you know my sister, Judy, is fighting cancer. She knows the prognosis is not good. Unless the Lord intervenes, the cancer will kill her. Judy and I thank so many of you for sending cards of encouragement and for letting her know you are praying for her.
Judy has said to me several profound things and there will be more nuggets of wisdom in the days to come.
One of her pearls of wisdom was stated like this: When you have cancer it changes everything. She said your values, what is important, your relationships – all of life is viewed through different lenses. It’s true! What a shame it takes cancer to remind me again of what is truly important in life.

WEIRD AUGUST
August, in my “book” is always weird. Summer is coming to an end, various schools are resuming classes, families are rushing to finish up vacations, and it is hard to find out who will be at worship on what Sunday!!! However, worship service attendance remains strong! I have been so surprised to see a fairly full choir loft on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. August is weird. I can’t wait for the fall!!

Student Ministry - August 2005

M-Fuge was great! I can’t believe I made it through the week without being pranked, although the morning I woke up inside my duffel bag on a bus to Memphis may have been an exception. Kevin told me it was a bizarre accident but I’m starting to wonder. That experience aside, the trip was a lot of fun.

It has been hot in Denver! I was told it did not get hot in Denver before I came by a committee that will remain unnamed. Ha! All I can say is that if this is a taste of the place down below, I’m glad I am not going there after death.
But it will get cool soon and then probably your pastor will be complaining about the cold.
I wonder to myself, “why I am not satisfied?” I wonder why I keep looking for something more. I wonder why I would give even a little focus to the weather. What do I really have to complain about?
I am financially rich, if you measure me by the standard of the people who live in parts of Africa and parts of South America. I am rich in so many ways beyond the financial, such as I am a Christian and going to Heaven when I die. The Holy Spirit makes the presence of Jesus real to me. I live in victory now by trusting Jesus, whatever the circumstance may bring.
I have a family who loves me. We are all healthy. We have a home (or should I say, the bank and I have a home! ha!). We have more than enough to eat and to wear. We have Bobo (well, not everything is easy to be thankful for!) Anyway, my point is, I do have a lot to be thankful for.
