Student Ministry - June 2005
05.27.2005

I do not think that my family arriving here in Colorado on the same week in which Star Wars Episode III premiered is a coincidence. While I am fully aware that many of you are more excited about seeing Star Wars than you are about my family’s arrival, (and I totally understand, by the way), I think these two events are related. I think that God, in His Sovereignty, willed for my family to arrive the week that Star Wars released so that I could tell you this: I am a huge Star Wars fan and I have been looking forward to seeing the third episode for years, but I am far more excited to be here with you than I am even to see the new Star Wars film. In all seriousness, being a part of your church is one of the greatest blessings I have ever received and I am so glad to be here. As I have looked back over my life’s journey so far, I believe that God has been preparing me for this very opportunity.

ne Parson’s Opinion

As I began writing this article I found myself sitting at a car garage waiting for Beverly to pick me up. Yes, car trouble again! Can you believe it?!

I tithe, try to be “nice” and succeed about ¼ of the time, and I even go to Wednesday night prayer meeting.

You would think all of this “good” stuff would insulate me from bad things happening. And after all, need I remind you; I am the senior pastor of ARBC. Surely that counts!
It is no surprise to you to find, in spite of all of these “spiritual “ things I do, I still face difficulty and problems in life.

Maybe you do “spiritual” stuff too! But the “spiritual” stuff does not insulate you from bad things either.

What is going on here?

“Jim, you are a trained theologian. Surely, you can give us the answer to the problem of pain and suffering!” Surely, being “nice” counts for something!

Are you kidding? Theologians have wrestled with suffering for thousands of years. The book of Job in the Old Testament deals with this topic. How can I add insight to what has been written?

A View from the Fields - May 2005
05.01.2005

One Parson’s Opinion

A new chapter begins with Gene and Candy Washburne coming to lead our youth and education ministry. Gene told me he is planning to begin his ministry with ARBC on May 16. Do you realize how soon that date will be here? In just a matter of weeks we will have a youth minister on the field.

For the Student/Education Search Team there were days when it looked like this process was going to take forever. Yet, we do have a Student/Education minister. It came about in the Lord’s time. Which is the best time, after all.
