FOOTBALL SEASON IS UPON US!!!!!

For me personally this is one of the best times of the year when it comes to sports! NFL and college football are starting up! Baseball is moving towards October and the playoffs, and college basketball is in sight! It doesn’t get much better than that as far as sports are concerned.

Do you remember the last time your team lost, and I’m not talking about a close game, I am talking about the last time they got destroyed, when it wasn’t even close from the beginning? Do you remember a time like that? Very likely, after the game when the coach was interviewed he said something along the lines of, “We just need to get back to the basics.” In all sports, if you fail at the basics, it doesn’t matter how much talent you have, how great your plays are, how perfect your game plan is, if you fail at the basics you will not succeed. That is why professional athletes do some of the same drills they did when they were 7 years old learning how to play their sport.

The same is true for Christianity. If we fail at the basics, we will not succeed. How are you doing when it comes to the basics? Are you spending time in God’s Word so that you know His voice? John 10 teaches us that if we know God’s voice we will follow Him, and not follow strangers. We have lots of competing voices that try to distract us from the voice of God. So do you know God’s voice? Do you spend time in His Word? How about prayer? Is prayer a significant part of your life? Read through the book of Acts and see how integral prayer is in everything in the life of the earliest Christians! How about sharing your faith? Are you sharing Christ with those God has placed in your life both in deed and word? Lastly, are you growing? Are you different than you were last year, or the same?

So how are you doing on the basics? Maybe as a church we need to get back to the basics of digging into God’s Word, desperately seeking God in prayer, sharing our faith, and making sure we are continuing to grow and become more Christ-like. Let’s get back to the basics together!
In Christ,
Josh Robertson
